United Flamenco: toward an evolving framework for flamenco education, practice, and appreciation

As flamenco continues to expand beyond its place of origin, new initiatives have emerged that seek to rethink how the art is taught, learned, and lived. United Flamenco Arts Society is one of them, a U.S. based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing flamenco through education, artistic practice, and community building.

Officially launched in June 2024, United Flamenco Arts Society was co-founded by dancer and cultural entrepreneur Leslie Roybal and guitarist and educator Guillermo Guillén, also the founder of FlamencoMaps, an online flamenco education platform and YouTube channel. Together, they bring more than forty years of combined experience in flamenco performance, pedagogy, and artist development. The organization was created in response to a shared observation: flamenco is often transmitted through fragmented models that separate technique, repertoire, and context from the interactive reality in which the art actually functions.

United Flamenco approaches flamenco not as a fixed set of styles, but as a living language. Music, cante, and baile are understood as interdependent practices shaped by compás, form, listening, and real time decision making. This perspective informs all of the organization’s activities, which provide continuity between study, practice, and performance.

Since its launch, United Flamenco has developed a range of programs combining long term education, online study, in person workshops, mentorship, and immersive residencies. Rather than relying on rigid level based systems, the organization emphasizes shared vocabulary, practical understanding, and collective awareness across disciplines.

Online Studies

United Flamenco is grounded in the belief that a strong and unified core knowledge is essential for all flamenco artists, regardless of specialization. Alongside the development of a specific discipline, the organization emphasizes the importance of solidifying an understanding of flamenco’s fundamental elements, creating a shared foundation that supports meaningful interaction across cante, guitar, and baile.

In February 2026, United Flamenco will begin a new cycle of online studies structured online studies designed to offer clear entry points into flamenco language while remaining closely connected to live practice and artistic reality.

The online programs include The Flamenco Guide, an introductory course that maps the essential structures of flamenco and clarifies how its elements function together. The Palos Guide focuses on the internal logic of major flamenco palos, addressing form, rhythmic organization, expressive character, and practical application. Compás Workout is a practice centered program dedicated to rhythmic internalization, clarity, and cross disciplinary application for dancers, musicians, and singers.

These online studies are conceived as part of a broader educational pathway rather than as isolated products. The emphasis is placed on comprehension, listening, and practical usefulness, providing tools that participants can immediately apply directly to their own practice, rehearsals, and performance contexts.

On-Site Workshops in Boston and New York City

Alongside its online studies and residencies, United Flamenco also offers On-Site workshops in Boston and New York City. These full day intensives invite participants to work directly with live music, compás, and interaction in a shared space, with the explicit aim of overcoming common disciplinary biases and learning to function as a team. Equal importance is given to cante, guitar, baile, palmas, and to a shared understanding of rhythm and structure. The workshops emphasize listening, responsiveness, and practical application, serving as a bridge between structured study and real flamenco situations where the art takes shape collectively.

Summer Residency Intensives

A central pillar of United Flamenco’s work is its Summer Residency Intensive, held at the Windhover Center for the Performing Arts in Rockport, Massachusetts. These residencies bring together dancers, guitarists, and singers for several days of focused, immersive work in a shared environment.

The residency format differs from conventional workshops. Time is structured around collective practice, guided sessions, observation, and direct application in live flamenco situations. Participants work with compás, form, accompaniment, and responsiveness, refining their listening skills and artistic judgment through real time interaction.

United Flamenco structures its residencies through three distinct but interconnected pathways. Circle focuses on foundational elements such as rhythmic clarity, structural awareness, and collective listening, providing essential tools that support all other areas of practice. Cuadro centers on the traditional functioning of the flamenco cuadro and the dynamics of tablao performance. Creative is oriented toward creative development and the construction of original work.

Across these residency formats, the emphasis is not on producing finished results, but on deepening understanding, sharpening criteria, and strengthening the tools that sustain long term artistic growth.

A shared and evolving flamenco

Although based in the United States, United Flamenco maintains an international outlook grounded in flamenco tradition. Its programs attract participants from diverse backgrounds and trajectories, creating a space where flamenco is studied seriously, practiced collectively, and experienced as it functions in real life.

Through its educational programs, online studies, and residency intensives, United Flamenco seeks to support a sustainable relationship with the art form. Flamenco is presented not as a static heritage, but as a shared, evolving practice shaped by knowledge, experience, and human connection.
