A new resource is here to stay. We believe so given the enriching experience we shared at our headquarters last Saturday, October 26. Space expoflamenco and the María del Mar Moreno School sealed a comprehensive agreement aimed at the training of their students, which already has signs of continuity.
We already know that the great dancer and teacher from Jerez, together with her dance company, has always sought the siguiriya a great source of inspiration for their artistic proposals. Perhaps, this was the reason for introducing us to the mysterious world of this column of the most jondo expression.
With the help of our colleague and coordinator of our headquarters, José María Castaño, we went deeper into the different oral and written sources that is known of the cante by siguiriyas. From Lorca's vision of his spirit – a wounded horse was knocking on every door – to the possible roots in gypsy beach songs, plaintive songs, dirges and seguidillas. From there, we move on to more theoretical aspects: the metrics, the beat and the harmonies that configure not only the style but also the main genre that it represents: romances, tonás, livianas, serranas, cabales… For this, we have the excellent collaboration of some notes by Santiago Moreno with his live guitar.
After a short break, we went to some audiovisual examples to complete all the explanations. In this way, artists such as El Negro de El Puerto, Miguel Vargas, Tía Anica la Piriñaca, Fernando Terremoto and Manuel Agujetas paraded across the screen. To end with a conversation in the traditional Jerez manner; that is, with a glass of sherry in hand.
The meeting also featured some luxury guests who, from the professional field, contributed some very high-level nuances. Case of María del Mar Moreno herself, of the already mentioned guitarist Santiago Moreno or of the singer Antonio Malena and the teacher María José Soto. We are already preparing a second meeting of our Classroom expoflamenco to welcome the admired dancer and her extraordinary group.
