The long-established social and cultural institution in Jerez has organized, as part of its activities commemorating its nearly two centuries of existence, a series of events dedicated to the saeta. Titled 'Voice and passion' It has been developed over two days as a complement to the saetas that will be sung this Holy Week from the balcony of its headquarters on Lancería Street.
Expoflamenco was present with the participation of our colleague Jose Maria Castano, last Wednesday, March 25th. In the first session, the speaker was... Manuel Naranjo Loreto, distinguished ethnomusicologist and secretary of the Chair of FlamencoCastaño spoke about his theory on the Jerez-style short saeta, which, in his opinion, is much closer to the old town crier's proclamation than to the siguiriya, as is commonly believed. Alongside his speech, several examples could be heard, especially in the voice of Manuel Torre and his clarifying arrow'To the sound of a hoarse trumpet and the voice of a town crier' which speaks very clearly of the connection between proclamation and sung prayer in bygone times.
