Ana María Blanco Soto, the Piriñaca of Jerez
Ana Blanco Soto (Jerez de la Frontera, April 11, 1899 – Jerez de la Frontera, November 4, 1987). Born in the Santiago neighborhood of Jerez at a significant turn of the century, she was a transcendental figure in the transmission of certain styles of canteHaving passed away at a considerable age, she was able to pass on her knowledge to successive generations in a high degree of purity. Suffice it to mention some variations such as the siguiriya of Tío José de Paula and Juanichi el Manijero, or the soleá of Frijones or Joaniquí, among others. Therefore, she is a very important figure for its study. Curiously, and as far as we know, the 125th anniversary of her birth in 2024 went largely unnoticed in her hometown. Hence, this is also a reason to remember her with a glass of oloroso sherry in hand.
