The Chair of FlamencoAndalusian Folklore and Studies of Jerez has recently presented at the Hotel Casa Palacio Maria Luisa the cycle Nights of San Juan, an initiative that has the collaboration of Jerez City CouncilThe event was attended by the municipal delegate for Culture, Francisco zurita, a representative of the Chair, specifically its president, Fran Pereira, and his secretary, Manuel Naranjo, and the director of the La Yerbagüena theater workshop, Sebastiana López.
Three activities make up this third edition of this cycle, which began as a tribute to John of the Silver, and which is celebrated on June 4, 10 and 18.
The first of the appointments is on June 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sala Compañía, an appointment entitled The Chair, to Pepe Marín, in which the city's long-established flamenco organization will pay tribute to one of its most illustrious members, José Marín CarmonaThe event, which like all others will be free and open to the public until capacity is reached, will explore, as the Chair's president, Fran Pereira, has acknowledged, "all the facets in which Pepe Marín has left his mark." Therefore, a theater workshop will be included. The Yerbagüena, who has prepared a version for the occasion of Los Tarantos, one of the works most frequently performed by the actor and presenter from Malaga.
Regarding the play itself, Sebastiana López, its director, confessed that "we are very excited. The Chair contacted us to put on this performance, and we are truly delighted with the result. We have made an adaptation, as it is a shortened version of the play, and I hope that people, and especially Pepe, enjoy it."
This tribute to Pepe Marín will also feature guests such as Manuel Lozano 'El Carbonero' and Pepín Mateos.
The second event will take place on June 10th at 8:00 PM, this time in the Moorish Hall of the Hotel Casa Palacio María Luis, to which Fran Pereira expressed his gratitude for "the kindness and support it always shows to the Chair." On this occasion, the focus will be on the copla, through a lecture given by... Francisco EscobarProfessor at the University of Seville, and which will focus on Flamenco and copla: literary-musical codes of León, Quintero and Quiroga.

Regarding this conference, Pereira emphasized "the importance of this genre," highlighting the work of the Chair throughout its history, "because we must not forget that we are also a Chair of Flamenco"Andalusian Folklore and Studies." And he announced that it will be a prelude to bringing back next year "the Night of the Copla, an initiative that the institution developed for many years in her honor and which had been lost."
Finally, the third conference will focus on the figure of Antonio Fernandez Diaz 'Fosforito', an honorary member of the Chair who passed away last year. "We had an outstanding debt to Antonio Fernández 'Fosforito', because he was a person closely linked to this Chair, and I believe it was necessary for us to pay tribute to him with this homage."
The presentation will be given by the researcher from Puente Genil, M.Miguel Ángel Jiménez under the title Fosforito, a masterpieceThe event will take place on June 18th starting at 20 pm at the Hotel Casa Palacio María Luisa.
In his speech, Fran Pereira expressed his gratitude for “the continued support we have received from the Hotel Casa Palacio María Luisa, which provides us with these wonderful facilities, the Jerez City Council, and our sponsors Williams & Humbert and Clínicas Beiman.” He also praised the Torresoto Neighborhood Association for their collaboration in staging the play.
Francisco Zurita, delegate of Culture, acknowledged that “the events of the Chair are always select, and allow us to discover or rediscover authentic treasures of our rich heritage.”
The City Council's Head of Culture spoke fondly of Pepe Marín, "who is part of our city's history, and whose recognition is more than deserved," and recalled, in reference to the second lecture, that "the copla cannot be understood without these three key figures: Rafael de León, Manuel Quiroga, and Antonio Quintero, who was also from Jerez."
