More than 10.000 people have enjoyed the IX Art Biennial Flamenco from Malaga 2025, which concluded on Saturday, August 2 with the show I am a Gypsy at the Rincón de la Victoria Auditorium. It was the culmination of a season that featured 38 scheduled shows, 23 of which were free to the public.
The president of the Provincial Council of Malaga, Francis Salad, has celebrated the success of this Biennial, “characterized by bringing the flamenco to the largest number of citizens, visiting almost thirty municipalities in all regions and making the flamenco first-class service to the residents of the province.”
The Biennial says goodbye after 72 days of pure flamenco with the participation of 282 artists including singers, guitarists, dancers, percussionists and musicians. More than 10.000 spectators attended the activities programmed for this ninth edition in 26 municipalities in the province of Malaga, "where they had the opportunity to experience unforgettable moments such as the dancing of Rocío Molina before the guitarist Francisco Vinuesa, the cante de Vega passion to the dance of Luisa Palicio, or the sublime gypsyism of Manuela Carrasco on stage,” Salado said.
On Saturday, August 2, the 1.050 attendees at the closing ceremony at Rincón de la Victoria thrilled with the spectacle I am a Gypsy, the biennial's own production that pays tribute to Camarón de la Isla, with Duquende y Peter the Granain and the dancer Farruquito, accompanied by the Malaga Symphony Orchestra, directed on this occasion by Ruben DiezThe artistic cast was completed by guitarists Manuel Valencia and Paco Cruzado, percussionist Paco Vega, and the choirs and palmas de Bolita, Manuel de la Nina, and Gema and Rocío Monje Montoya, daughters of Camarón de la IslaThe musical direction was provided by composer and arranger Jesús Bola. The orchestrator was David Álvarez García.
The President of the Provincial Council has highlighted "the quality of the programming and the opportunity that has been given to young talents such as Anton Cortés, the dancer Anna Almagro and the singer Little boatman, which has shone in this 2025 edition." In 2027, he recalled, this cultural event will celebrate its tenth edition, which has established itself as one of the best in Spain in this field.
The opening gala took place on May 27 at the Cervantes Theater with the absolute premiere of The Maharani, led by the company of Malaga-born dancer Luisa Palicio, who was supported by figures such as Pasión Vega, La Macanita, and Carrete. Among the most notable events, the Ballet Flamenco AndalusiaDirected by Patricia guerrero, presented Blessed land in Mijas; Manuela Carrasco starred Dancing to Manuela in Ojén, and Identity, with Aurora Vargas, Antonio Reyes, Jesús Méndez and Manuel Carpio, filled the new Coín auditorium with art.
The Biennial was also experienced in the streets, such as on the emblematic Alcazabilla street in the capital, where a recital was offered on June 28 flamenco traditional with Jose de la Tomasa, Vicente Soto 'Deafness', Juana of the Pipe and Concha Vargas.
Likewise, proposals from Malaga artists such as Francisco Vinuesa, La Lupi, Rubén Lara, Ana Almagro and Luisa Chicano, and featured the participation of special guests such as Rocío Molina, Manuel Liñán, Alfonso Losa and Chato from Málaga.
The program was rounded out with a wide range of cultural and educational activities. Among them was a documentary series at the MVA Cultural Center every Tuesday in July, with titles such as Fandango, Fosforito o Zambra; exhibitions at the MAD in Antequera and Benalauría dedicated to flamenco photography and sculpture; and small-scale performances in heritage spaces such as churches, museums, and public squares; conferences;
The Biennial also focused on training, with the cycle Flamenco tall At the AC Málaga Palacio Hotel, the 10th International Camp of Flamenco and Dance in Mollina, and the masterclasses of the International Seminar of Flamenco 'City of Malaga', in collaboration with the School of Flamenco of Andalusia.
As a preamble to the Biennial, a flamenco mass was celebrated in the church of the Divina Pastora broadcast by Canal Sur, and a children's cajoneada in the Plaza de la Merced with the participation of 70 boys and girls from the Cruz Verde and Lagunillas neighborhoods.
