El Vatican Council II Among many other things, it modified the formal part of the liturgy. In this way, the novelty was introduced that consisted of moving from the exclusive use of Gregorian chant to the possibility of using traditional music from the villages and even popular music. This allowed the rites to be adapted to the forms and traditions of each place, opening the door from then on for other music to participate in the masses. This is how the different flamenco masses arose.
In 1970, on the occasion of the feast of Saint Barbara, patron saint of mining, the first miners' mass is organized in the city of La Unión. The miners' mass is a flamenco mass, with the peculiarity that the cantes that are executed in it are almost entirely cantes miners. The miners' mass, at this time, is already part of the customs of the city of Unión.
We review some of the pieces contained in the work Mining Mass of La Union 1988 year.
