At 61 years of age, and after several years of fighting the cruel disease, the singer from Jerez Andrés Cabrales Mesa He left us forever on Wednesday, July 9th. Among his great virtues was having kept intact the experiential school, the one that sticks to your skin in the university of the street, not on your cell phone. Hence, his expression held a great deal of stark truth.
Its upbringing took place in one of the microcosms flamencoThey are representing some neighborhoods of Jerez that received quite a few families from the cante coming from the gypsy neighborhoods. Such is the case of Federico Mayo, a group of blocks belonging to the area popularly known as El Chicle, where the beaches of San Telmo once lapped the waves centuries ago and which became an emblem of the urban development of the 60s.
«Andrés de Jerez lived with some illustrious residents of the Jondura such as Mijita y Moneo, Antonio Agujetas or José de los Camarones, among many others. And so he became immersed in an unparalleled way of saying the cante among children's games, always imbued with the sounds of Manuel Agujetas, whom he approached with veneration and respect.

To all this must be added the figures of his father and his brother James, active members of the Peña Flamenca Los Cernícalos, temple flamenco then in front of the Hermitage of San Telmo, where he came into full contact with the fans of Jerez and the performers who passed through its stage. Without overlooking other locations such as the peñas The Buleria o Uncle Chalao, during the time it was open under the full direction of The Posh One.
After some comings and goings of the artistryAndrés Cabrales managed to establish himself and give us a fruitful period coinciding with his stay in France. An album –Scratching the soul (Buda Records, 2017) – in the company of his Samuelito, a very young French guitarist who answers to the name of Samuel Rouesnel, is the best reflection of this era. He will also participate in the cycle of cante of the Jerez Festival within the intimate concerts at the Villavicencio Palace, thus seeing one of his greatest dreams come true. Carlos Grilo y Juanpe Carabante were other guitarists who knew how to accompany their cante unstitched. We must not forget his time in training Caliphate 1/3, labeled as futuristic folklore, participating in 4 projects.
Perhaps all its flavor was reached in the short distances that facilitate the meetings of cante in which he used to be very generous. Andrés de Jerez had a cracked voice and he looked truthful in the canteShort on the beach air. Bohemian and humble, his great charm earned him many friends who will always remember him with his smile and those heart-piercing fandangos that tore our hearts at dawn. May he rest in peace, and all my best wishes to his family and friends.
