Fiesta de la Bulería, reinvented once again

Two decades later, doubts and differences of opinion remain. Neither the bullring, nor the sports stadium, nor the Plaza Mamelón, nor the Alcázar were successful. This year, they have performed well in their debut venue, Plaza Belén in the San Mateo neighborhood.

Whether it was about the poster, the coolers, the tickets, the length of the show, or the drinking in the streets…there was always something to complain about. Those were the words of Fran Pereira back in 2014, when there was heated debate about the best format for the venerable Fiesta de la Bulería. In 2002, 7,000 people packed the large bullring of Jerez, and the crowd sang in unison: Tooorta, Tooorta... There was a street-party atmosphere with way too many people, along with the never-ending discussion when the popular singer was the absolute idol of young fans of that time. People were more captivated by the bohemian singer Juan Moneo Lara, El Torta, than by flamenco itself.

And two decades later, doubts and differences of opinion remain. Neither the bullring, nor the sports stadium, nor the Plaza Mamelón, nor the Alcázar proved to be the right choice. This year, however, there have been excellent artists performing at a brand-new venue: Plaza Belén, in the San Mateo neighborhood where the Lola Flores Museum is located.

The first day of the program unfolded like an open-air neighborhood festival with a spirit of participation and inclusion, as well as a children’s program. A sort of class/flash dance of bulerías was led by the Jerez teacher Chiqui, and Eva del Cristo offered a singing recital in her energetic style.

On the second day, a middle-class audience filled Plaza Belén, some people clapping along with the lively ensemble of David Lagos and Melchora Ortega, David powerful, Melchora vivacious, accompanied by the guitars of Alfredo Lagos and Domingo Rubichi. David delighted the audience with his lively marianas, a style usually marked by sobriety, while Melchora offered a varied buffet of song that included Bambino, while Agujetas Chico lent his voice to traditional cante.

Thursday the 21st turned out to be a complete surprise. Three outstanding artists, the popular Fernando Soto, the explosive Mara Rey, and the beloved Coral de los Reyes, delivered a repertoire of popular Spanish song with a musical ensemble, almost entirely to a 4/4 rhythm. Bulerías remained waiting in the wings in case it might slip in, something that happened far too little in this program, despite the artists being perfectly capable of the task.

"El Capullo is wearing his 71 years well and remains an idol for both young and old, thanks to his unique personality, which he defended convincingly in the Bulería"

On Friday, at last, there was bulerías for us addicts, the twelve beats that take away our worries in the span of a single ¡olé! Elu de Jerez always moves me, despite a few off-key moments. She is flamenca, so everything is forgiven. Sharing the program was El Barullo, who carries the sound of his father, Manuel Moneo, which says a lot. Manuel de la Fragua, sober and intense, along with the guitars of Domingo Rubichi and José Gálvez, rounded out the performance with skill.

On Saturday, the final day, the program was long and varied. The Diego Carrasco Family set the stage for Diego himself, always putting his personality and spontaneity first. He declared himself old and unable to remember his lyrics, but his natural way of being saved him time and again. Maloko, Carmen Amaya, Fernando de la Morena Jr., and other regulars completed the menu.

The classic format of a group, with each artist taking turns at the front with song and dance, remains effective under the direction of a veteran like Antonio Malena, who added his traditional a capella songs. María del Mar Moreno took part as a guest artist with her dance, while dancer Rocío Marín surprised us with her powerful and deeply rooted style.

El Capullo is wearing his XNUMX years well and remains an idol for both young and old, thanks to his unique personality, which he defended convincingly in the Bulería.

Dolores Agujetas He had a good performance with Domingo Rubichi on the guitar, and in such a good mood, he went out to dance rumba at the end of the party with El Capullo.

And thus ends the Fiesta de la Bulería 2025.
