The Chair of FlamencoJerez University announces its 2025 national awards

Mayte Martín, Juan Manuel Cañizares, Ana María Bueno, Calixto Sánchez, Juan Villar, Cristina Cruces, José María Castaño and Eulalia Pablo have been awarded. The Jerez Cup, in its categories of cante, guitar and dance, have been awarded to Enrique Soto, José Quevedo 'Bolita' and Leonor Leal.

La Chair of FlamencoAndalusian Folklore and Studies of Jerez announced on Wednesday, October 15, the winners of the National Awards of Flamenco 2025, awards that will be presented at a special gala to be held on November 8 at the Museums of the Atalaya of Jerez.

El Villapanés Palace, headquarters of the Culture Delegation of the Jerez City Council, was the scene of this presentation, which was attended by the Culture Delegate of the Jerez City Council, Francisco zurita, the person in charge of the Unicaja Foundation in Cadiz, Javier Vela, as well as the president of the Chair of Flamencolodge, Francis Pereira. The event also featured the author of this edition's poster, the artist Luis Marquez, and the Jerez Philatelic Club represented by its president Jesús López.

The list of winners, which includes the 'Copa Jerez' category for local artists, is as follows:

  • NATIONAL AWARD OF CANTE: MAYTE MARTIN
  • NATIONAL DANCE AWARD: ANA MARIA BUENO
  • NATIONAL GUITAR AWARD: Juan Manuel Cañizares
  • MASTERY AWARD: Juan Villar
  • DISSEMINATION AWARD: José María Castaño
  • RESEARCH AWARD: CRISTINA CRUCES
  • SPECIAL RESEARCH AWARD: EULALIA PABLO
  • HONORARY CHAIR AWARD: Calixto Sanchez
  • JEREZ CUP OF CANTE: Enrique Soto
  • JEREZ GUITAR CUP: José Quevedo 'Bolita'
  • JEREZ DANCE CUP: LEONOR LEAL

In his speech, the delegate of Culture, Francisco Zurita, congratulated "the Chair of FlamencoAndalusian Folklore Studies and History of Jerez for the magnificent work carried out throughout the year in favor of knowledge, research and dissemination of flamenco".

“We are especially pleased that, after more than a decade, these awards were revived in 2023, and that today we can continue celebrating their continuity with a new edition that recognizes the talent, mastery and commitment of those who dedicate their lives to art. flamenco", has added.

Finally, he recalled that "we also draw from these deep roots in Jerez's bid to be the European Capital of Culture in 2031, a project that integrates art, history, and the passion of our people."

Javier Vela, representative of the Unicaja Foundation, acknowledged that "for us it is an honor to be able to participate in these awards that are a benchmark in the world of flamenco”, while emphasizing the “commitment that our organization makes to culture and especially to supporting Jerez’s candidacy for European Capital of Culture in 2031.”

Vela praised the work "that the Unicaja Foundation carries out in the province of Cádiz," recalling "the concert program we had this summer with the presence of renowned artists."

The president of the Chair of Flamencology, Francisco Pereira, has referred to the “long historical trajectory” of these awards, created in 1964 and which enjoy “a special significance” within the world of flamenco.

The Chair has expressed its gratitude to the Jerez City Council for their support in launching the gala on November 8, and especially to the official sponsors, Unicaja Foundation y Solera Group, "for the effort and trust they have placed in our work but above all in these awards, whose objective is none other than to recognize the work and dedication to flamenco of these artists and above all their commitment to culture.”

Among the new features of this edition is the creation of a specific poster for the event, an oil painting by Jerez-born artist Luis Márquez. It will be donated to a local social institution "to do our part for all those in need."

The author of the poster thanked "the Chair for the trust it has placed in me" and stressed that his objective "is to represent the cante, dance and guitar,” but also “to pay a small tribute to the older women we have enjoyed so much, with that dance and those ways of living.”

The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 8, at 12:00 p.m., at the Atalaya Museums and will be open to the public until capacity is reached.

 

An art gala

During the presentation, the program for the awards ceremony was also announced. The ceremony will be held on November 8 at 11:30 a.m. at the Atalaya Museums, with free admission until capacity is reached.

The cast includes artists such as José Méndez, Miguel Lavi, Lidia Hernández, Felipa del Moreno, Eva Ruiz-Berdejo, Fernando Galán, Miguel Téllez, Antonio Higuero, Nono Jero, Santiago Lara and the special collaboration of the Alvarez Beigbeder Orchestra from Jerez.

The awards announcement ceremony also served as an opportunity to present the commemorative stamp for this National Award, which was specially produced for the occasion by the Jerez Philatelic Club.
