The Pavón Theater recovers the Pavón Cup flamenco with a tribute to the great Mayte Martín

The event, which began as a competition held in 1925 and 1926, returns with Juan Valderrama as artistic advisor and with recognition for the Catalan singer, who will receive the award from Arcángel

The Catalan artist will close the flamenco galas that will be held from May 2 to 4, in which singers Juanfra Carrasco and Rancapino Chico will also perform.

From May 2nd to 4th, the Teatro Pavón and the Regional Government of Andalusia will celebrate one of the milestones of the centenary of this outstanding Madrid cultural venue: the revival of the Copa Pavón, which has the artistic guidance of Juan Valderrama. This legendary competition flamenco It was held only twice, in 1925 and 1926, attracting dozens of artists from all over Spain, and was successively won by Manuel Vallejo and Manuel Centeno.

On this occasion, the Pavón, instead of the contest, will pay tribute to the great Catalan singer Mayte Martín, who will receive the award from another renowned singer, Arcángel. It will be the last of the three days of the Copa Pavón dedicated to the canteThe first day will feature Rancapino Chico, and the following day Juanfran Carrasco. Two young figures already established in the present, alongside an established artist at the height of her artistry.

The Rancapino Chico recital May 2nd will feature guitarist Diego Amaya and the palmeros Edu Gómez and Luis de Pijote. This Andalusian singer is the son of the great singer Rancapino and was already “humming songs before he could even talk,” according to his father. He started very young, using his father as a mirror and source of inspiration. Thanks to him, he maintained contact with figures of the flamenco like Manolo Caracol, Antonio Mairena, Juan Talega, Camarón and Juanito Valderrama, among others.

In 2016, for his great career, and despite his youth, he was awarded at the IX Edition of the Gypsy Culture Awards – Young Creators. In 2019 he released his first album, for my love of art, recorded live with figures of art such as Pansequito, Aurora Vargas, María Vargas, Manuela Carrasco, Cristina Hoyo, Vicente Soto Sordera, José el de la Tomasa. That same year, he was awarded the Nuevo Compás del Cante alongside the great dancer Manuela Carrasco.

Juanfran Carrasco comes from Extremadura, the stage name of Juan Francisco Carrasco, who first appeared on stage at age 6 and began his artistic career at 15 on the Canal Extremadura program Duende Joven. Following this program, he began taking classes with Miguel de Tena and Esther Merino. 

Already hailed by many media as the next generation of a style of singing unique to his homeland, he has received, among other awards, the Badajoz Provincial Council Award, the Seville Commonwealth Award, the Antonio Mairena Youth Award, and the Carmona Award.

With José Gálvez's guitar at her side, Mayte Martín (Barcelona, ​​1965) will close the Copa Pavón on May 4. The Catalan singer is one of the most prestigious artists on the current scene of flamenco and music. 

Since its origins, when it won the main award in 1987 flamenco, the Miner's Lamp of the International Festival of Cante of the Mines, its cante Precious and serene, full of nuances, responds to a desire to break molds that have not conformed to flamenco, but have expanded to other genres such as bolero, on albums like Haunt (nominated for the Latin Grammys in 2001), Of fire and water, in collaboration with Katia and Marielle Labèque, rubbed tempo y Tattoos, his last recording, from 2024. In it, he recovers great songs from the XNUMXth century, by authors such as Violeta Parra, Serrat, Jacques Brel and Pablo Milanés.

Throughout his career he has received awards such as the Don Antonio Chacón Prize in the XII National Art Competition Flamenco of Córdoba, the Critics' Award, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the International Prize for Flamenco School of Flamenco of Andalusia and, last year, the National Culture Award of the Generalitat of Catalonia.
