The singer flamenco Jose Merce has been awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts 2024, one of the highest recognitions granted by the Government of Spain. The announcement, made recently by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, highlights the exceptional contribution of the Jerez artist to the enrichment and dissemination of flamenco as cultural heritage.
A track record of excellence
Born in Jerez de la Frontera in 1955, José Mercé is one of the great references of the flamenco contemporary. With more than fifty years of career, he has managed to merge the purest roots of the genre with modern elements, attracting new generations and expanding the audience of flamenco globally. His extensive discography, which includes hits such as Air y Alma, as well as his ability to thrill on stage, have consolidated his figure as an international ambassador of this art declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts is awarded to people or entities that have distinguished themselves in a notable way in the field of artistic and cultural creation or in its conservation and promotion. Reactions to the award
After hearing the news, José Mercé expressed his "deep gratitude" for the recognition and dedicated the award "to all the flamencos who fight every day to keep our culture alive." He also stressed the importance of continuing to support and disseminate the flamenco as an essential part of the Spanish identity.
The award of the medal has been celebrated by the cultural and artistic community. Prominent figures of the flamenco, like the dancer Sara Baras and the guitarist Tomatito, have congratulated the singer for his "well-deserved" recognition and have highlighted his influence on new generations of artists.

Among them, there is the actor Javier Cámara, for her brilliant career in film and television; the writer Rosa Montero, whose literary legacy has enriched contemporary narrative; and the fashion designer Palomy Spain, noted for its innovation and creativity in the textile industry.
In the field of music, in addition to Mercé, the singer and composer have also been awarded Robert Iniesta (Extremoduro), the groups Camela y The planets, the singer and songwriter Kase.O, the opera singer Carlos Chausson Gracia and the music representative José Emilio Navarro Viña 'Berry'.
The official presentation of the Gold Medals for Merit in Fine Arts will take place in a solemn ceremony attended by the King and Queen of Spain. The event, which will be held on a date yet to be determined, will bring together the main representatives of the world of culture and the arts in a tribute to Spanish talent and creativity.
